Combating malnutrition with neutrality, independence, and transparency

The global issue of hunger was the initial inspiration behind MUNCH. In a hyperconnected world, it seems absurd that we can’t distribute the most basic of resources, equally.

Malnutrition is also a contributing factor to other elements of inequality. It directly affects health and wellbeing. It drags down life chances and prospects for escaping poverty, denying communities the foundations to build from. Hunger and malnutrition are concentrated in areas often facing other severe hardships, conflict, climate crises, and natural disasters.

Providing better access to food, water, and basic resources is essential for creating more equal global development and access to opportunity.

Donations from people living in a country that operates at a surplus is one way to help redress the balance, but lasting change will need to come from system shifts in how assets are managed and distributed.

That is why we are delighted to be able to offer the MUNCH community the option of supporting Action Against Hunger, to aid their mission to ‘tackle the causes and effects of hunger — no matter what the circumstances.’

Who are Action Against Hunger?

Action Against Hunger is an international charity committed to saving the lives of malnourished children and supporting their families to beat hunger.

For more than 40 years, they have led the global movement that aims to end life-threatening hunger for good. Their teams operate on the front lines — treating and preventing malnutrition in some of the world’s most remote places.

They operate under a set of clear values and principles, to help people in need and tackle the causes and effects of hunger and diseases that threaten the lives of vulnerable children, women and men.

Action Against Hunger also operates with a policy of strict neutrality. Established in France in 1979, AAH is a non-governmental, non-political, non-religious, non-profit organization. They remain completely independent, never acting in the interest or under the auspices of any government or private organization.

AAH has the single mission of empowering people to provide for themselves, see their children grow up strong, and help their communities prosper through better access to nutrition. In 2020, they were able to reach 25 million people through their programs, globally.

Their most recent projects have included:

  • Helping the response to coronavirus in Somalia, supporting the only quarantine hospital in the country’s capital, Mogadishu
  • working in 60 health facilities in Yemen to treat 31,000 people suffering from malnutrition during the ongoing conflict
  • treating over 3,500 children under five for undernutrition every day in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh
  • restoring access to safe water for communities affected by the Beirut port explosion in Lebanon

How can MUNCH support them?

As always, if selected, all donations from MUNCH transaction fees, staking rewards, and Charity Circle donations will be routed automatically and trustlessly directly to the charity. MUNCH is never in custody of the funds and the charity receives 100% of donations allotted to them.

How will these donations be used?

Action Against Hunger works to transform lives in some of the most vulnerable communities in 46 countries around the world.

In 2020, 96p in every £1 raised was used directly for life-saving work around the world. The remaining 4p in every £1 was spent on fundraising and support costs. AAH accounts are audited annually to ensure the funds donated are used effectively.

Donations provided by the MUNCH community will be used in the:

  • Saving the lives of malnourished children and supporting their families through our nutrition programmes
  • Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to prevent the spread of diseases
  • Ensuring people have consistent access to healthy, nutritious food
  • Helping people build better livelihoods so their communities can prosper
  • Preparing communities for disasters and helping them rebuild from emergencies
  • Supporting people affected by hunger and conflict through mental health programmes
