The Hunger Project was one of the initial inspirations behind the MUNCH model, we are proud to be able to offer the choice of supporting them to our community.

The Hunger Project

Human beings are generous and empathetic. People want to help. In fact, people love to help others. But, individuals can be overwhelmed by the scale of some problems. Can one person really impact global hunger?

There are also practical and logistical problems that prevent people from giving. Not everyone can afford set donations each month. People may want to vary the causes they support. Different countries may not support the same models of giving as others. And, of course, people need to prioritize their own direct needs and problems, too.

This leads to a scenario where people wait for the right time and get paralyzed by inertia. There is always a bill to pay, doubts about the future, or a new cause to support. It leaves people that want to help others stuck in a pattern of waiting for the right time to give back.

A different kind of giving back

This is why we created MUNCH.

We all know the saying ‘only invest what you can afford to lose’. We know it’s valuable advice. But, it also suggests that if you can afford to risk money in a potentially volatile asset class, then you can afford a small slice of that investment to go to the basic human needs of others.

With MUNCH giving back is convenient, automated, and ingrained. By taking a small ‘bite’ out of each transaction, it creates a financial ecosystem that allows people to invest in their futures while giving back.

Contributing to ending hunger seemed like a natural fit for this model. As a basic human need, something that no one should be experiencing, hunger was the cause chosen for the first concept of the MUNCH project. It seemed so simple. Take a small bite out of the money you could afford to invest, and take it out of the ecosystem and distribute it to people that really need it.

As the first charity identified by Rodrigo and MUNCH, we are now proud to announce that The Hunger Project is officially available for the community to vote on to select as our next charity partner.

Who are The Hunger Project?

The Hunger Project is a charity created with the mission to end hunger and poverty by pioneering sustainable, grassroots, women-centered strategies and advocating for their widespread adoption in countries throughout the world.

The Hunger Project currently has programs throughout Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. These programs are based on an innovative, holistic approach that adapted to meet local challenges, but are built on the foundation of three essential pillars:

  • Start with women
  • Mobilize communities
  • Engage government

Their work now reaches nearly 16 million people in nearly 15,000 communities worldwide and this commitment that community-led development is starting to make deep and sustainable change.

You can read more about their work programs in Africa, South Asia, Latin America here.

How can MUNCH help?

Donations provided by the community will go towards ongoing projects to reduce world hunger through the strategies mentioned.

Of the 690 million people suffering from chronic hunger globally, 98% live in the developing world. Unlike famines that receive emergency aid, chronic hunger is a silent, invisible, day-after-day condition so it requires ongoing efforts to generate lasting, sustainable programs.

The Hunger Project’s work enables communities to create, stock, and manage their own food banks. In Africa, food bank hubs then provide storage for any excess and ensure safe food storage and security during off-seasons.

Donations will also be used to develop income-generating activities from sewing projects in Mexico to cow-fattening projects in Bangladesh. The women and men of these communities become able to increase their incomes so that they can purchase the food they need independently.

MUNCH donations will also be used to provide access to microfinancing. Through the Hunger Project, partners learn how to increase their incomes and use their savings to improve the health, education and nutrition of their families, building sustainable wealth generation that starts to lift communities out of risk from hunger.
